Vauxhall prepares for OnStar - your own pit-team

1 November 2013

Vauxhall is starting work on a European version of the US OnStar system. This provides 24/7 call-centre back-up in case of emergency, linked to the car by GPS. For example, if the car is stolen, there will be theft alerts, vehicle tracking and the ability to remotely limit a stolen car's speed or isolate its ignition.

In case of an accident, airbag deployment is monitored and registered to despatch emergency services to the site if the crash. Service reminders are sent automatically, and the system can monitor items such as bulb failures and brake pad wear.

The system is expected to go live around 2016.
